Rear wiring loom woes
I have had problems with my OS rear light for a while but until recently wiggling the cable has solved the problem temporarily. I have finally got round to looking at the cause of the problem and it turns out Mister Bodger has owned my van too!
The wiring is a mess of terminal blocks, scotchlock connectors and random bits of wire twisted together. Time for a radical rewire!
I have unthreaded all the cables up to the point where the cable travels over the fuel tank. The wires have been arranged in lines, labelled and all the black tape that binds the cables together has been taken off. The plan:
After cutting out the bad bits of wire I have had to scavenge additional wire from an old MGB wiring loom (at least I can make the colours match!) and I have concentrated on making as few joins as possible when patching in good cable. The joins I have made are soldered and sealed with heatshrink. It is very fiddly attaching everything in to the junction box which is bolted straight through the towbar bracket to avoid drilling in to the chassis.
Still to do: rethread the wires from the rear lights to the junction box, run a power cable from the battery to the towing relay, clean all the earth points and give the system a thorough test. Hopefully the new wiring will outlast the rest of the van - the harsh winter has taken its toll on the bodywork and I think the welder will be busy before the next MOT!

Bodger.
Hi Ed-Don,
Thats funny he must have had my van as well, it was the same when I got it just a pile of scotch locks and bare crimp on connectors all rapped up in miles of black tape.
I ran a five core trailer cable from front to rear and then removed the heavest towbar I have ever seen, made out of three inch angle iron, that brought the rear suspension up by two inches.
