Hi Mr Lord or can we call you Hawk?

Welcome to the bunch of nutters club. Are you an owner, a fan or just bored of talking to sensible people

Well, you could just call me Gaz.....
I currently own a Volkswagen T25, and 2 days ago i bought a '84 Bedford CF diesel from a well known auction site. The van has been used for the last decade or so for travelling around music festivals, and has been 'done out' as a live in vehicle, and has a wacky paint job!!
Needless to say, if this is a nutters club, then i may not have too many problems fitting in....

Awsome. I saw that old bus on ebay. You have a fair bit of work by the looks of it, but a great base for a project. what was she originally? I don't recognise the body?

I'm really not sure what the body is, it does say somewhere, i think there are 2 possibilities, Luton or Horse Box.
Chassis looks sound, i drove it 350 miles home, the only MOT issues that i am really concerned about is the emissions (2.3 diesel) and the brakes are laughable, you really need a strong leg!
The bodywork is not going to present too many problems, the cab will be the main issue, but, not MOT fail as far as i know.
It did'nt cost a lot of money, and, it makes me happy to drive it, even though it is mega loud and very very slow!

Body is a Hawson walk-thru chassis cab (as opposed to chassis cowl type with Hawson flat panel sliding front door/s); steel frame, alloy skin, GRP roof & Luton; options of sliding side load door/s, rear roller shutter or hinged doors and timber bulkhead (half or full) behind the cab seats. Yours looks like it's got the rear extension past the cross member with big round holes in it.

Unique rot traps are the top of the cab beneath the GRP Luton bit (probably because the cut tops of the screen surround & door frames were capped with aluminium alloy, compounded by the drip edge sealing dying with age) and wheel houses in the back over the rear wheels that gradually settle as the mounting edges below the floor corrode. Body vertical members below floor level may be wasted away too (common problem on older steel frame bodies anyway).

Chassis is CF350; if there's a code 035 on a small plate on the left hand door frame then it's a factory 140-inch wheelbase with heavy duty suspension; if not then it might be a stock 126-inch wheelbase extended post-production.

The top of the screen where it meets grp has already gone, i am looking at ways to remedy it without resorting to a cut panel.
Also, the wheel arch jobbies under the floor are ropey too...!!
And yes, it has a woodburner in it, bed/table and full kitchen. Ply lined bulkhead with door, really cosy!!

There's 3 sections inside the screen surround top: outer skin, inner skin (inside cab) & a roughly U-shaped channel between the two for the main strength that's joined to the door frame tops.

Not an easy one to do properly without removing the Luton bit first and then it's a whole heap of fun keeping alignments right for refitting the screen because there's spot welds all round the weatherstrip rebate ...

My friend is used to welding scrap vw campers back to life again for a day to day living, but, even he always seeks input first, if you were taking on the job, and you did not fancy removing the luton, how would you go about it?

Em. It's not something I'd taken on with the Luton still in place ...
