Sad Looking Ice Cream Van

So the serious work has started on the van !!!We ripped out her guts yesterday. She has a few "issues" to deal with. She has some leaks on the injector system, a dodgy engine mount, a leaking wheel cylinder, new headlamps and indicators are required. One of the mirror backs has rotted away, we have a slight water, and oil leak so some gaskets needed. Diff has a slight leak as well. Its going well but we only have 3 weeks to get her ready for the Halifax Gala.

Had a diesel/injector engineer come to see the van today, it would appear the reason it runs like poo, and smokes like Alex Higgins is although it is the 2.3 Diesel, it had a VA diesel pump, when it should have a VE one instead. Luckily we had one in a box, which has gone for testing and calibrating.

The body has dropped 2.5 inches at the rear due to rotten timber, so box section subframe being welded in tomorrow night. As well as brake master cylinder seal kit, and replacing the wheel cylinder (again). Hopefully this should mean we have brakes. We also have a fair bit of welding to do, but that too should be done by midnight tomorrow.

I personally, will start to DA sand off the body with 500 grit, get the first bits of filler in, and basically start getting it ready for primer. We also need to buff all the window frames etc, and external trims.

Pre MOT went very well, only really one dust cover on the ball joint on the front suspension arm, however its tiny so sikaflex and underseal, will hopefully disguise it short term, and a couple of plates to weld on the sills, apart from that she is very solid indeed.

Ordered some headlamps, as the others had no silver left what so ever, having trouble with finding indicator units at a good price, so may use series one landrover ones as can get them for arounf £8 each.

Slowly but surely, we are getting there !!!!

So things have moved on !!!! We have brakes ! Thanks to my excellent understanding of Lockheed braking systems, or maybe it was Phil's excellent advice

An angel call Ian from Independent Diesels in Halifax very kindly took our VE pump off to his workshop and completely rebuilt it, along with a sonic clean. The VA pump will be up for sale, all proceeds going to our charity.

Here is a pic of old and new. The van now starts straight away, and runs sweet with hardly any smoke whatsoever !

Hi Rich,

I actually got given some series 1 Landrover ones, which are almost identical, but thank you for the offer. I don't suppose you ended up with a Harvin Ice Cream Van amp did you ?
