Air in fuel system

Hi all,

Just been out for the first trip of the year drove from chester to Monmouth on friday a bit of driving down there and all was fine, until Monday drove about 8 miles and all was fine left it for about 5 hrs then went to drive home, and thats when it started!!!!
Got about 30 mins into the journey home and it was a bit juddery kept going for another 15 mins when it cut out,
Managed to get it going and tried again but cut out about 1 mile down the road,
Cracked open the injectors again got it going lasted another mile tried this a few times but no luck.
AA man came tried the same no luck. all he could say was that there was air in the fuel system, and got me towed home,
Now I cant start it, I have checked the fuel up to the fuel pump and all seems fine, but cant get fuel out of the bleed bolt on the pump the engine is a Perkins 4-154 and the pump looks a right bugger to get off (any easy way?)
are these pumps prone to anything going wrong on them?
Or any suggestions as to what it might be??

Thanks,
Dobbind.

Your first port of call is the lift pump.
try removing the output pipe and using the primer leaver see if you can get any fuel coming through.
If not then you need to disconnect the input side and connect this to a long piece of clear pipe then either use a hand priming bellow or suck to see if you can get any fuel coming into the clear pipe.

If there is no fuel then you need to drop the tank and investigate whats wrong in there, could be that the pick up pipe is blocked with curd...

once you have fuel coming out of the lift pump you need to bleed the injection pump it self, there is a bleed nut which allows you to do this.

Once the injector pump is bled then crack open the 4 injector pipes at the injector end and turn the engine over till you have vented the air out .

could be any of the pipes perished or even the lift pump / fuel filter / pick up pipe in tank / faulty stop valve.

you need to try and bypass few things and see how you get on.

one way is to fit a clear pipe to the tank supply pipe and remove all the air out of the system then using a pipe clamp pinch the end of the clear pipe and leave.
If the fuel has disappeared then the fault is between there and the tank,
if the pipe is still full then you need to move the clear pipe to the next point you wish to bypass I/E lift pump then filter housing and so forth..

I know its a long drawn out job but its the only way

Just a quick update,
I have set my compressor to 1 bar and pressurised the fuel system (no leaking anywhere)
So I started at the tank, pick up pipe looks ok and the tank looks clean ish.
the outlet pipe (with the cloth weave on the outside) was wet with diesel, so I replaced that and have now driven about 5-6 miles without it breaking down not got the time to take it any further until midweek but that is about 5 times longer than I got before.
Fingers crossed that will be it

Thanks,
Dobbin

diff levels is simple At the center of the diff is a big nut just undo this and put your little finger in the hole to see if you can feel any oil. if not tp it up with SAE 90EP

As for the gearbox need to know which 1 you have fitted , Bedford/Vauxhall/Zf

Glad you found where the air was entering the system...

Cheers gethin,
The gearbox if I remember is a ZF? only has 4 gears and I never use first gear as it is a crawler gear and not really needed.
It seems to have a nut on the side with a screw driver slot in it but not sure how this system works.
As for the air in the fuel system I have taken it for a 20 mile drive today and all seems ok, so hopefully it will be ok this weekend

Cheers,
Dobbin.
