My yearly question

It's time for to post my anual question of the year.

Last weekend i was running her, the battery was flat but she jumped without problem.

This week to try to avoid anymore battery probs i fitted ( with help) an Isolator.

The isolator works and she turns over on jump but she just cant fire up. My first thought was my petrol had disapeared and so i put a
conatiner full in this morning and again she tried and tried but couldnt start.

Two other things that may help someone to come up with a suggestion.

The first time i turned her over both yesteday and today on the frst turn for just a second you thought she had fired as i could hear and feel it but possibly its just petrol in the pipes.

The second thing is that i fitted the isolator by the battery and had cut the wire a little short on the van side and my helper decided to try and pull more through even though i had said there was no slack underneath. He did give the wire a few hard tugs. I can see that under the body the battery wire seems to have another black wire that runs next to it but im not sure where it goes or if that could have become dislodged when the live cable was beeing tugged at.

Im looking in my manual and i cant find any diagrams or anything to help.

So any ideas about where i should start looking ??

sounds like you have 1 or 2 problems to sort out .

first check that the fuel pump is actually pumping fuel under pressure,
remove the pipe off the carb and spin the engine over. if you have fuel then put your finger over the end lightly to see if the fuel can push past. if not suspect a faulty pump.

now on to electrics,
check to see if you have 12v at the solenoid on the side of the carb.
at same time check the 12v on the coil, if you have electronic ignition then pull the king lead from the center of the dissy cap and using an insulated pair of pliers hold the metal end about 10mm from the engine inlet manifold, with the engine spun over you should have a health spark..
now refit the king lead and check in inside of the dissy cap make sure that its bone dry,
with everything reconnected remove each plug lead in turn and using a known good spark plug again hold the plug onto the inlet manifold you should get a good strong spark, if not then suspect rotor arm or faulty leads and cap.

if you have points system check that you have the correct gap and that when you flick the points you get a small spark on their face and at the same time holding the king lead as above should produce a healthy spark.
If this is missing check that you have 8v to 12v on the input terminal and try fitting a new set of points and condenser.

of what i might find when i get back from work to orrow

Thanks i will try to cover those things however its difficult when handy helper disregards everything i say and blindly does his own thing.

Today we established that i haven't dislodged any pipes or wires under the body. Handy helper found what he thought to be the fuel pump but it didn't look like to much like that in Haynes . He disconnected the pipe from the back and took of its cap, we cleaned a very scuzzy little filter but it made no difference. After trying to start her again the pipe was removed once more and it was dry and no sign of any petrol.

He thinks that means i have a blockage or the pump has packed up and he needs to drop the tank tomorrow. I would much rather not as one of the tank straps isn't the best.

If the old girl i still in on piece when i get back from work tomorrow i will attempt to work my way through the things you have listed.

Thanks for the advise.

Fuel pump

The tank was dropped and the pipes cleaned but no go. Handy helper then poured petrol into the pump and it started first time.

Better start looking for a new pump then.
