Gutter of pop top

Morning all,

I'm slowly hunting down all the leaks in my camper, so I can then start to patch up the floor and other parts on the inside over the next few months.

I'm looking at what I think is one of two major culprits, the first being the front window, the second being the roof gutter.

Window and door frames are relatively simple, I'm just going to remove the window, fix the frame, put the window back in with a new seal.

With regards to the roof, I'm thinking that the best way to fix both is to actually take the entire roof off, repair / replace / weld / fix the gutter, and then put it back on.

This then begs the question. How do you go about removing the roof from one of these things and not destroy it? Is there someone who specialises in this sort of thing that any one knows who could assist?

I'm assuming if I go around and scrape out all the paint, silicone and mastic I will likely find rivets or something holding it down? Or is this opening a massive can of worms and I'm better off just adding another layer of silicone or roof sealant and crossing my fingers?

Any advice appreciated!

Clifton

I wasn't sure how the gutter & top were connected (if at all), I guess this is one of those where I just need to take it off and see heh? :)

I have absolutely no experience of pop-top construction but in the absence of any other response I would suggest that you remove some of the interior trim to find out how the base of the roof section is attached.

Take a few pics then post them on here.

I would think there ought to be some kind of narrow horizontal flange on the bottom of the roof and on the top of the "Van" sides. This is only a guess of course . . . . .

cheers,

Pete.

no the pop up is completely separate from your gutter old son ..pop roof up one day when its not raining get as much rust off as you can and dollop some fibre glass onit .itll do till summer then you can take it all back and do it proper.

i built a whole new gutter all round on my pop up years back

Guttering

Hi,the guttering is a molded piece at the top of the side panel. The roof is spot welded int,o this guttering. When the rot is removed you may need to strengthen the edges and reshape the gutter with steel before you fiberglass.I fiberglassed the whole guttering after I had rebuilt it so I am sure it is water proof.I hope this helps.Cheers+Beers,Jim

My gutters weren't quite as bad. But my popup food needed sealing. I found in my model that t it was just sealed in placeas it Mo ed when I cleared old sealer off so I bonded it back in with strongest bond I found bit like tiger seal which they use on bidykits and such like

I have the same issue with mine. I plan to strip all the paint off, remove as much of the rust as possible with a wire brush or wheel, then treat the corrosion with Kurust (or something of the like), brush on some anti rust primer, then repair with fibreglass and paint. If you do not kill and stop the rust first it will spread under the fibreglass.

Thanks all. I've come to the conclusion that I'm also going to start with the simple approach of stripping it all back to see how bad it might be as soon as the weather improves.

I was going to strip the interior out anyway (including ceiling lining), so will have a look at it from the other side and decide if the roof needs to come off or if I can just tidy it up.

I'll post more pictures once I get more of the paint and other bits off.

I would be extremely interested in your progress with removing that pop top. I have newly aquired a CF pop top and have exactly the same issue, plan to remove the pop top to attack rust properly. Keen to know how you get on

Will do, I've now gutted the inside, so will make a start as soon as the weather looks a bit more supportive of my endeavours!
