2.0 XE swap into CF2 Hi guys, I'm in the process of breaking my pride and joy (modified astra coupe), which will eventually fund the purchase of a CF autosleeper.I've spent hours and hours reading all about engine and gearbox combos, and all sorts of transplants. I'm no stranger to Vauxhalls so I have a brief understanding of most of the engines old and new. I had planned to swap the engine when I bought the van to something more modern, but try to keep it simple. If I was to buy a CF2 with the 2L engine, would a 2L XE bolt up the same as the blocks are almost identical? I also have a jag rear axle coming from a friend's dad before he scraps his XJ6. The plan would be to run the XE with a ford type 9 box, is this viable? I already have an XE in the garage which is stripped down for a forged internals rebuild, so I could use this or buy another XE and keep the forged one for another sportier project. the blocks mite look the same but are different . you would need to find out if the XE has facility for engine mounts either side as they normally hung by the front. secondly you will need an adaptor plate to fit the type 9 both of which are becoming hard to source , fitting the jag rear end will mean loads of fabrication of strengthening both the floor and chaises, you will need a custom 2 piece prop to fit . all the electrics and fuel system will need to be transplanted with an external fuel pump supplying the correct pressure and capacity . is the engine using a coil pack with pick up or dissy on the end of the cam??? exhaust system will be simple so long as you can get the correct manifold for the engine as the standard 1 will be directly where the engine mounts should be... I know that the 1800 engine and gearbox out of the manta is a straight forward swap if you can find 1. |

Thanks for the reply. Some interesting points there, I may have to have a rethink. The 16v head from the XE will fit on the NE bottom end, so maybe I could make some sort of engine that way, or I could try a C20SEH (130bhp) out of a mk2 cavalier with the manta gearbox |

I've looked at this before and interesting to see the list of cars that used the NE (8 valve OHC engine from the 80's as used in cavalier etc) as well as the manta 1800 (manta 2000 I think used a completely different engine, hence the box no use). Wiki says that the Opel Record used it, and I guess that was rear wheel drive, so might have a suitable box, as well as many cars in the USA. I know the 1800 manta boxes are usually very rare, so might be worth looking into what else might have a suitable box. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Family_II_engine I'm concluding from the info above that the XE and NE generations of engines used different block designs at the flywheel end? I thought XE was basically an NE block with 16 valve head, but is that wrong? Or I wonder is an XE head would fit on an NE block? Never heard of that being done so I guess not. ---------------------- |
