West Berks based Bedford on death's door - anybody local fancy the project?!

Hi everyone,

I hope this is the right place to post this, but please point me in the right direction if not.

I bought a 1983 CF1 'facelift' last March with an MOT. It now seems that MOT was questionable at best, as I took it in to a local garage before Christmas for an estimate of what it would need to get through the next MOT. The verdict wasn't good, the mechanic said he doesn't believe it's currently fit for road use. The main problems that he wrote down for me were:

Both outer sills corroded to excess
Nearside inner sills + floor corroded to excess
Offside inner sill corroded to excess
Nearside and offside wheel arch area corroded to excess

I also asked him to quote on diagnosing and fixing a suspected problem with the clutch (it slips out of reverse, specifically when having to do anything strenuous like a slight incline) - but given the other problems he didn't get to providing this.

I was told that it would need a specialist welder to re-stitch the body and chassis, which would be a minimum of approx. £1500, not to mention the other, less severe issues it has (other areas of corrosion, clutch problem, loose wing mirror.) By the time all of the essential work has been done, I would never make my money back, but I guess that's not what we Bedford owners go in for!

Suffice to say, I don't have the money nor expertise to move this forward myself. I am not mechanically minded in the slightest. I can drive - that's about it! So, I am curious to know if any members or the forum know of and can recommend any Bedford enthusiasts in the West Berks area who might be able to help me with this project in a slightly more cost effective (for me) way than getting a specialist welder on the case.

I can follow up with more info. about the vehicle itself, and photos of the damage if there is any interest.

If I can't find anyone to help me out, it'll have to go up for sale, so if anyone is interested in it from that point of view, let me know.

Thanks for your time, and sorry its such a long post!

All the best,
berkshirebedford

Thanks for the response Gethin.

I attach some of the pictures I've been able to get by crawling underneath the van. Shows the corrosion on and inside the two rear wheel arches.

I'm in Thatcham, nr. Newbury. Anybody local fancy offering to help get this through its MOT?

My cf had gone at the back in the exact same place as yours, I'm pretty handy with the welder as over the last 3 years I've done various college courses. I believe it would be beneficial as gethin suggested to try and do a part time course, it would give you the knowledge to do a lot of the work as long as you're not in a rush. I've rebuilt a sill section and part of the arch, it's far from finished but starting is half of the battle.

Thanks to Gethin and banterchicken for the comments, but I've decided to sell her.
