New member 1975 CF with a leak

Hi all,

We recently purchased our 1975 CF Auto Sleeper from a little corner of Northern Ireland, managed to drive him all the way back (all be it slowly!) with no bother what so ever but now believe we have a little leak.

This may probably be a well known issue so please forgive me if its been dealt with many a time before me! Slight novice to all things CF but trying to learn and find my way around. I have uploaded a couple of pictures below of the offending leak. The fella we purchased it from mentioned that - as we were driving it back a fair way we should slightly tighten (half a turn or so) the rocker cover nuts on our return and we did do about 500miles for the return journey with the CF! So thinking it might be the rocker cover thats got the leak then? Or am I way off? Leak seems to be coming from where the red arrow has been placed.

Hopefully a relatively easy fix and nothing too major but would love your guys input and opinions if at all possible! Any help is most appreciated!

Cheers
Matt

Oil leak.

Hi,

It could just be needing a new cork gasket under that camshaft trust plate or the cover plat maybe cracked, I have come across both these problems on my own Bedford.

Hi Doujoy,

Thanks for the reply. I have heard of the cork splitting under too much pressur so it may be what you mentioned, couldn't notice any cracks on the coverplate though. I had the cover off today and tightened the 3 bolts half a turn as they were a little loose after a big journey from when we picked it up. Seems to have done the trick hopefully, will see if we still have a leak in the morning!

Cheers
Matt

van looks in amazing condition. Are the sills etc. all original?

In my experience leaks from the rocker cover are almost impossible to eliminate, but I think you're right in this case with the plate on the end.

If the leak continues clean the area with brake cleaner fluid which will degrease the the head and evaporate very quickly leaving you with a dry area which should make it easier to see where the source of the leak is when you run the engine.

Hello,

@ Middid - yes the seals are all the original - as far as we know!

@ Andy - cheers for the tips - I will give this a go as the leak hasn't stopped since tightening the 3 bolts on the end plate.

The liquid is a clearish/watery with a hint of oily residued... Would this be still related to the rockercover/plate?

Cheers!

Matt

Leaks

Hi Mat,when you put new seals in .I find asmall amount of Hylama blue helps. this does not set it just allows the gasgit to sofen and seal to the joint. The stuff you are seeing is a mixture of condensation and oil, these engins are known for this.If you look in to the oil filler tube you may find it is white with condensation.when this is bad I flush the engine with a cheep oil then put in the good stuff.I hope this helps.Cheer+Beers,Jim.

Hi Jim/Andy, haven't had much chance to have more of a look with the van over the last few days unfortunately. It does look like a mixture of what Jim mentioned as condensation/water with a small amount of oil. Oil filler tube looks clear no white residue as of yet.

Will keep you all posted when I have had chance to give it a proper clean, cheers for your help!

Hi Bertie,Vauxhall engines have leaked forever oneway or another so they produced an oil leak stopper. It deoe's not stop large leaks but does work on smaller ones. This leak stopper is now sold in Halfords for about a £5 er.Cheers+Berrs,Ji.
