cold starting tickover

Hi everyone
l don't have a problem or do l because l'm asking the question
my 1983 Beddi 2.3 auto starts first time. The magic pump pedal twice pull choke out turn key away she go's (the reason l do this the man l brought it off told me to do it? ) the Question l can't just drive off and push the choke in a bit at a time till she warms up if l try this she stalls so l sit on the drive for 5 to 10 mins warming her up then she drives away nice as pie l have rebuilt the carb with a carb kit, is it just because its automatic and needs high rev's when gears are engaged.Thats why l say is it a problem ? or just me.
nock off to work 2/10

Warm up time.

Hi Enoch,

These old carb type engine's do need a bit more time to warm up but make sure your pipe to the exhaust manifold is able to draw the hot air off the exhaust up into the air intake going to the carb, check that the flap in the air cleaner is opening.
Automatic gearboxes have a valve block and a fluid pump to pressurise the system of valves and brake band servo's and if the fluid is old and dirty or maybe just not enough fluid in the system the circulation maybe slow or snatch
when the pressure reaches a point where it can make the servo's work.

start up

Hi Enoch,it sounds to me as th'o your engine is running lean.I was told by a Bedford mechanic in the 70's to start a Bedford do not touch the pedal pull the choke fully out and start the engine. This I have done sinse and it always work for me.This is after a full servise and color tune.Or a Cripton tune up.Cheers+Beers Jim.

Thanks for the advice
l will check on the auto fluid
Thinking about it there is not a pipe going to back of the cleaner from the manifold then again there is no connection on manifold as l said be for she runs sweet as a nut new plugs + leads but will check again. As for the pump on the pedal just followed instructions and it starts first time will try without when the weather gets warmer.
again Thanks
Enoch

Full coke.

Hi Enoch,

The only problem with using full choke on a cold start is that the oil pump cannot keep up with the engine rev's when the oil is cold and thick, hence you will get that horrible crankshaft rattle until the oil pressure catches up.
