Bedford CF ice cream van clutch problems......

Hello All,

I'm new to this site, and after some much needed advise.

I have a 1973 bedford 2.3 Diesel engine (guessing mod) ice cream van.

I store away from winter, and pop and turn over for couple of hours every week or so, today after 6 months standing, have started up (no problems) dropped clutch gone to pop into first and CRUNCH..... It won't allow me to select any gear!!!!

Is this a gear box problem? Clutch? Or clutch clicking ?

Or any advise to fix this problem without having to tow to a garage?

Be very grateful of your knowledge and advise....

Thank you

Hi Andy & welcome.I'm pretty sure this has been mentioned before & I think it's the clutch plate,or could be the cable, that has rusted & seized from standing.
I'll try & find the other post with the solution.

I found this from our Gearbox Technician on a thread from last year.

Hi to all,

I am hearing a lot about this problem at this time of year because the surfaces of flywheel and clutch centre plate are effected by the damp and frost, so when the van is standing of long periods of time not being used they get bonded together.
With the clutch centre plate trapped between the two flat steel surfaces a bit of dampness can make a very strong bond, one trick I have used is to start and run the engine and work the clutch and gears and once warmed up and all is working as it should I lock down the clutch pedal with a piece of wood and let the heat dry off the surfaces.
Then after half an hour release the clutch pedal, the best way to stop this happening is of cause to take the motor for a drive but if it is on a sorn document this can help prevent the clutch welding its self to the metal.

Hello Andysheil.. That does sound like the clutch centre plate has rusted on one of its faces. There are things to try to shock it free. If you have the room to drive the van or you can tow to private land then after warming the engine stop it. Put the van in 1st gear and then start the engine with the clutch pushed down. the van should move initially on the starter and then when engine takes over. Keep the clutch pushed down all the while and whilst moving jab the throttle then brake pedal to imitate having kangaroo petrol. You will have to turn the ignition off when you need to stop if this does not free the clutch. If space is tight around the van then chock the front wheels and raise one of the rear wheels with a trolley jack so it rotates freely. This time put it in 3rd gear and start the engine. the rear wheel will rotate. Again with the clutch pressed down and the engine at tickover jab the brake pedal to try and shock the friction plate free. Neither method is guaranteed but worth a try before getting the spanners out.

Regards Andy
