Engine won't start plus misfire

Grrrrrr.
Engine won't start and backfires after a minute or so of trying.

Work done:
- New rocker cover gasket.
- Exhaust not connected to manifold whilst sorting a snapped stud.
- Thermostat housing rotted bolts so not tight - waiting on helicoil to sort that

Only thing I noticed was that when refitting the HT leads, they appeared to be fitted in the wrong order - no4 on the cap was too short to reach plug 4 and vis versa on no1 - too long!. I read the order is 1-3-4-2 but appeared to be 4-2-1-3.

Can someone confirm the order please and/or if 4-2-1-3 might get things going and stop the backfires?

I may well have dislodged any number of tubes and cables during the work so any other thoughts are welcome?

Back fire.

Hi limboid,

The firing order is 1342, has the distributor been moved or taken out or the rotor been fitted the wrong way around, on the under side of the rotor there should be a square peg and a round peg if they are missing the rotor could be fitted the wrong way.
Number one plug lead should be at the front of the cap nearest the manifold with the rotor pointing at the first manifold stud, pointing to number four would mean the rotor is fitted the wrong way around or the distributor drive is in the wrong position.

Engine won't start plus misfire

thanks chap, I will go check once the rain stops.
However I did some playing and swapped the leads around - 4213 and the misfires stopped although still not starting.

If the dizzy is the wrong way around, could that be the lack of firing?

Also, I noticed a spare connection on the coil - should there be 4 things connected or is the existing 3 ok?

Starting.

Hi lamboid,

The coil connections are ok but the distributor could be in the wrong way around or the rotor arm is fitted the wrong way round, I think you will have to set up the timing on its marks with number one cylinder on compression TDC and check that all the timing mark line up then remove and refit the distributor in the correct position.
Once that is done change the leads with number one nearest the manifold to get back to firing order 1342.

Damn it!
After a lot of time ruling things out, we always came back to firing order so found the right spanner eventually and set 9 degrees btdc and guess where the rotor arm was - 9o’clock.
Tried 1342 with Plug1 in the no.3 position- no luck.
More fettling and after setting 9 below tdc again, mate noticed rotor was at 3pm - we set for the wrong stroke!!!
Put Plug 1 into no.2 slot in normal order and boom she fires on the the first turn.
Can only assume the dizzy was configured by logic rather than knowledge by putting plug 1 at the front of the engine. Could have saved a lot of time by not trusting the previous owners maintenance.

Tipex pen will be in use today to mark No.1 on the dizzy cap!!!!

Runs rather rough since backing off everything on the carb and the origin of this pain - leaky rocker gasket - has not been solved as I appear to have split the new gasket during fitting.
