Some truths about spam

So you think you know where your spam is coming from do you? Well, you are almost certainly wrong. Just because a spam email says it's from fred@somesite.com the chances that it's actually from there are very slim. You can make an email appear as if it came from anywhere VERY easily. You could even be acting as a spam relay without knowing it. When was the last time you virus checked your PC? When was the last time you checked for patches for your email software? Outlook Express (unfortunately one of the most common email programs) has been patched more times than I've had hot dinners (well, almost). How many times have you received an email with an attachment? You open the email, run the attachment and you're infected. Without knowing you have just opened your PC as a spam relay. Without knowing your PC could be sending out emails to everyone in your address book and a lot further.

How do you stop it? Simple,

1 - NEVER open message with file attachments without first checking with the sender that they did send it.
2 - Install a virus scanner.
3 - Keep it up to date and scan your PC often.
4 - NEVER open message with file attachments without first checking with the sender that they did send it. I know I've already said that one but it's VERY important.
5 - If you are running Win2000 or XP go here - http://grc.com/stm/ShootTheMessenger.htm and download & run 'shoot the messenger.

Stolen email addy

Someone is using my email address to send spam to lots of people and even some of my contacts. I keep getting emails from the postmaster saying that they have failed to be delivered, but some get through, Phil got one. Can anyone help on this one, as I would love to be able to trace who is doing it and have it stopped.

Cheers
Derrick
