Mystery Machine

Hi there. I just thought I would share a few photos and bits of our Mystery Machine which we bought last September 2007. It is a cf250 2.3 petrol autosleeper. We drove it home from Lincoln after it conked out twice after misfiring and gernerally sounding awful. 2 AA guys however got us running; both commenting that it wasn't too bad really! Over the winter months I stripped most of the interior, redid the curtains, cushions and carpets. I had a go at re-tuning the engine; adjusting the tappets, re-setting the ignition timing and adjusting the carb. It now sounds ok, a bit noisey still but I plan to get a new cylinder head and convert it to unleaded this winter. But for now it is useable, cosy and we want to have some fun! We had our first night away in it this weekend and it was great. Thanks to all of you on this forum who have helped us get back on the road. I have never done anything mechanicy before, but with a night class in mechanics and all I have learned and continue to learn on here then I feel fairly confident that we should be able to keep her going for another few years at least. She passed her 100,000 miles too this weekend - does she get a telegram from bedford-cf club????

Here are a few pics anyway

This is of course the Mystery Machine (not my paint job, previous owners responsibility!) - either love her or hate her! We have to love her otherwise we would have three unhappy children!!

Apart from the engine bits, the only thing that really needed doing was the interior. I stripped out the front cab area and was pleased to find very little rust underneath. I rust treated and 'Hammerited' anything that looked like it could do with a touch up and experimented with some fibreglass over a few little holes around the arches. The front passenger seat was trashed so, after advice, we decided to fit a double cab seat and also rear seat belts for the back two seats which we realised could be faced forward. All the mountings for the seats and seatbelts were reinforced with aluminium 3mm thick plates, M10 bolts and nylock nuts. Each mounting needed an individual plate because of the inflexibility of trying to fit brand new Renault Master seats in a 25 year old van. It was a bit of a nightmare but we got the plates fabricated and now I know that all the children and hubby of course, are safely strapped in.

At last it is done and we are really pleased.

We have a month left until her MOT so fingers crossed. I had the brakes checked by our local garage and he said it all looked ok. A little bit of welding to do on one of the sills but he said the wheel arches could be fibreglassed so thats the next job.

Hope you have enjoyed the story so far. I will keep you posted and thanks again to everyone who has got us this far.

Jane
