New CF Converts!

Greetings CF owners!

Rita and I wanted to get a camper, and the budget was pretty tight so either kitting out a van or getting a rolling wreck were the main options. We did a six-hour return trip to Essex to look at a Freight Rover (Sherpa) based wagon. Ran like a dog and the steering was rusted solid, the rest was just - rusted.

Went up to St Helen's to see a CF high-top, and I was suckered straight away. All tidy underneath, but some scrappy bodywork repairs. Drove it back that night. Huge winds, so crossed the Manchester Ship Canal bridge at less than 40mph!!!

Returnming through Stoke a huge noise, sounded like the manifold had cracked, pulled off and got the engine cover up - a spark plug lying on the manifold igniting the puffs of fuel coimng out of the hole! Put it back in finger tight (Mental note: Take toolkit when p[icking up a new car/van!) and got home OK. I now know it was just not tightened properly, rather than a duff thread - no helicoil required.

Next weekend we said s*d it and went down to Exmoor. Did 600 miiles without doing more than checking oil and water!!! using redex lead substitute - is this the best stuff to use?

Since then have failed the MOT - needs a patch near the rear spring hanger (not structural), truckloads of brake pipes and a new brake drum (it has a rear fitted at the front!) Hoepfiully to be sorted this weekend. Already the fridge, radio, washers + gas heather fixed and a small inverter fitted. Got some plywood in to 'improve' the beds and a pair of luxury seats from a sprinter bus to let two sit in the front in safety to fit.

It's just so much fun to drive, it eats the hills on Exmoor for breakfast. It brings back loads of memories of cars in the 80's when you could fix things easily and enjoy it all!
