My 1980 CF280 Advantura

Hi all,
Only posted a few things on here but thought I would give you all an update on "BERTHA", our 1980 CF1 280 coachbuilt.
Bought last year as an MOTed and TAXed camper just back from a weekends use in Bream in Somerset.
So, I naturally assumed it was ready to go and use.
WRONG!!!!!

Initial thought was to take it for an MOT to make sure it was at least roadworthy.
FAILED!
Rust on the underside of the front wheelarch and headlamps rusty inside, 2 tyres cracked on the sidewalls so all in all, not too bad.

I repaired the underside of the wing which ended up being across the front of the chassis leg.
They had covered the damage with fibreglass had been chipped off!
Really annoying as it would have took more to fibreglass than repair properly!
2 tyres purchased and new plastic headlamp bowls and halogen units fitted and we have a full ticket!

Next, it is hard to start so the following has been done to cure this problem:-
Electric fuel pump (Facet)
Sparkrite electronic ignition.
New points, coil, nearly new weber 34 carb.

She now starts within 2 cranks of the engine...lovely.

Other problems:-
Drivers window would not open...
Reason, a bit of wood was jamming the window shut.
Cause, Person had fitted speakers into the door, used an angle grinder to make the hole and cut through the mechanism.
Fix, weld the hole back up to a reasonable condition to fit the new mechanism.

Water tank leaking...
Cause, hole in base due to exhaust resting on the tank.
Fix, cut off plastic ties holding the exhaust up and fit proper rubber mountings.

240V sockets not working in the rear...
Cause, person had wired the sockets into a thermostate assuming the next owner would know this is where to plug a heater into.
fix, rewire sockets to fusebox and throw away thermostate.

petrol space heater not working...
cause unknown.
fix, replace plastic pipe with copper, re-solder all joints on the pcb of the controller, apply 12v with a small current to the fuel pump and hit it until it worked!

Leak in the roof
Cause, Previous owner had used silicone sealant in the front roof vent, this had detached from the ally roof.
Fix, remove roof vent, prime roof, use caravan sealer and refit vent.

I have ripped out so many wires, the previous owner loved his wiring!!! shame he was not very good at it!
I am also just about to fit an LPG kit as mentioned before so I will document that also.
Pictures to follow.

Well done.

Hi V8spence,

You must have bought a van MOT't in the same place as mine was, by a blind tester who work best with a back hander.
Sounds like you are on the road now so enjoy your new found freedom.

Doug.
