more work than i planned, again

took my new mk1 ambulance off to the mot station, started up , drove to the garage, started up went to the mot station, then the fun began. she got stuck on the brake tester, as soon as you put your foot on the accelerator and put her in drive ( automatic) the engine stalls. not only that but after a whie she refused to start at all, coughing all over the place. we pushed her off the tester and onto the ramp then outside the garage and called the rac. told them that i would need flat bed tow truck, guy in van turns up, spends ages on the carb, it was full of crap where the previous owner ran it out of fuel, but that wasn't the problem, not moving was the problem.we crawled it 1 mile and then parked up and i had to wait for a tow truck, took 5 1/2 hours to get home 6 miles from the time i made the original call. the problem isthat the engine starts and sounds great but if you put it in gear the engine stops, if you do manage to get it in without stalling it will move on creep but as soon as you depress the throttle it stalls. anyways, i've had enough, every old auto that i buy always goes wrong in the first 4 seconds of me owning them so tomorrow the engine and box are coming out and i'll see if i can find an old sierra/granada with the sohc fuel inj pinto in and slap them in there, ive got my cortina next to the camper so ill have a measure up tomorrow and see if it looks reasonable. i think i want the granada because i read that the engine loom is seperate from the rest of the electrics although a quick scour of ebay tells me that there are not many sierras around let alone sohc injection ones. i'll post some pics as sson as the operation starts.. as for the mot it failed on a small bit of welding on the front outrigger, 2 front shocks i need to take out the wiper mech and unseize it and sort out the handbrake so at least that wasn't too bad.

so you're saying it will be easier to fit a ford engine and gearbox than to adjust the carb?

Mine (petrol auto) had a similar problem but oddly only in reverse, it was dirt in the carb (idle jet)

did the man stick a sniffer up the exhaust to read the gasses? (to enable accurate adjustment of the carb)

Change the fuel filter while you're at it.

To add to Suterman's very good suggestions: it'll be easier to remove the fuel tank & clean it out than shovel in a forrin engine & box ... & still have to do something about what's in the tank.

it would be easier to sort out the engine thats in there but i don't like old auto's they feel strange when driving them, i've never been able to get used to the way they feel. engine out today, cut the front out, i'll make up brackets for everything so it all bolts up nicely whenit goes together again, never taken a cf engine out but it was alright, i had the engine slung all wrong which proved a pain but it didn't take too long, there seems to be lots more room than i imagined ,i'll have to start measuring. ideally i'd like an engine with the exhaust on the passengers side as it would make things a buit easier, the pinto's on the drivers side, the vauxhall red top is on the nearside but that will cost too much after i've got the engine the bellhousing adapter etc. i just want a donor car that can supply everything at a nice cheap price..[/img]

strangley enough the engine flew through the exhaust emissions without a hitch, like i said it ran really well , just couldn't transfer the power to the box, the guys down the garage and rac man reckoned either the box or torque converter, i'll put the engine on ebay as it did run very well.

took the wpier mech out, i'd rather do the engine again i reckon, not the easiest thing to remove unless i've missed a trick somewhere. one side is seized really bad, i can move it with a small hammer so i've soaked it in wd and ill look at it tomorrow.[/img]

i've bought the donor vehicle, hopefully it should be delivered by the weekend, (someone who i work with knows someone with a car trailor that goes to liverpool every week and the car i want is a part ex in a garage in the wirral, i'm in bristol) . that was a spot of luck , it seems that all the cheap cars are up north. it seems that i've chosen a slightly more complex upgrade than i originally intended but that always seems to be the way, i'll post a pic when it turns up.

got the donor car today, an r reg 2.3 ford scorpio, its s twin cam with lots of low down torque , a four pot as well.it has air con ,power steering pump etc all on, i'll be using the seats as they are in good nick and comfy. the wiring looks like it will be fun but at least the engine loom is seperate. unfortunately there are no haynes manuals for these things ( not this model anyway)so i'll have to do a lot of research for the wiring.engine took around 5 hours to get out but iwas listening to the footy and wimbledon and i did label everything that came off plus there are a lot of things to undo.hopefully get it in situ on sunday and by the end of monday have the engine and box in there final positions and with the mounts made, have to work tomorrow which is very annoying. ...... ...

i 've put the engine in the bay, i'll have to cut the floor a bit. the engine seems really tall and the gear lever may be in a strange position. the engine doesn't seem to want to go over the steering rack so i'm looking at putting it behind, i'll have a better idea tomorrow.

the engine mounts are made up very roughly, i have something simple tack welded in place, once i am 100 percent sure thats where they need to be i will reinforce them and make them significantly stronger, took me 5 hrs and much swearing to get the gearbox on the splines yesterday, i was so knackered that i haven't even looked at the van today just couldn't face it. the gear lever sits well back on the box but i have a plan for that. my biggest problem is the clutch peddle. the induction manifold eats into where the cltch should be, i have taken the one from the scorpio and i think i'll adapt it as it is quite slender. the scorpio also uses a concentric hydraulic clutch so using the matching pedal may be to my advantage. tomorrow ill try and make up the gearbox mount and fiddle with the peddle, once thats done its onto the electrics.mmmmmmm i have just got my disc uprights and calipers, are there any simpli-ish caliper replacements , the ozzies go on about holden stuff so thats out of the question, anything over this side of the pond. they also mention ford hubs and bearings on machined down stub axles but then i'd have to do all 4 wheels or carry 2 spares.[/img]

spent most of the day trying to sort the clutch out. i welded two of the pedal shafts together, this gave me some room to the left of the brake pedal to mount the scorpio clutch pedal. i hacked up the scorpio's clutch mount and joined it to the cf one. i had to cut a hole in the bulkhead because the scorpio's slave cylinder is mounted on the pedal and wouldn't fit unless i did so. lots of fiddling and fettleing and scratching of the head but i'm happywith the result. considering the room available and the hassle it could of been it was 4 hrs well spent.

the engine and gearbox mounts are now finished, took the fuel tank out today, no tank return spout so i'll have to put one in this week, once thats done most of the horrible under tha van jobs are finished. have to sort out the speedo as the output from the box is electric rather than mechanical but thats the least of my worries, try and have the engine all put back together by the end of the coming week, things will slow now as im back to work .

this is a great looking conversion c20spit, I am very tempted to go down the transplant route but all this fettling puts me off! I can see the logic with the donor car, will you make up a wiring harness from this just to be able to run the engine off the ECU or are you going with air con etc? OMG all those sensors.:?

i think i'll go with an after market ecu, megasquirt is simple and cheapish. there is a problem on this car with the ecu requiring the correct key for it all to work, i have all the wiring to do this but it will be a lot easier if i dont have to bother. the engine sits a little high for my taste but i wont be throwing it into any corners so i don't suppose it matters really.

never heard of megasquirt, but looked it up and it does seem to resolve the sensor issues. Still looks complicated but I guess you have that problem with any engine that has an ECU.

well its been a month of doing little things that don't seem to be pushing the project onwards. had to rewire the entire engine loom with fresh wire(correct colours used) as the scorpio loom was in a shocking state and i don't know how it managed to run. one of the nastier jobs has nearly been done now, had to weld a box on the bottom of the fuel tank so i can mount the injection pump, could have placed it on top and had a feeder pump but this way will be fine.achieving a watertight weld for the box itself is easy as ite 3mm thick steel and simple to weld, achieving liquid tight weld between the box and the paper thin tank was somewhat harder. i've got some water in it at the moment so i'll check sunday and touchup any where that is seeping.i have a metal gauze filter in the tank the there will be an injection filter before the pump as well. the original hydraulic pipe from the cluch slave cylinder to the concentric clutch was about 20 cm long so i took it to a company called bristol hose and they cut and joined it so its now more like 1.3 metres, not tested it yet but hopefully it will work other wise things will get awkward.

managed to finish off the fueling, have a sytec filter and pump mounted on a plate that sits on the cross member. the clutch reservoir is in situ , just needs a bit of straightening.assembling the front suspension now but i have lost one of the metal plates that sits at the bottom of the shocker( see pic), anyone have a spare one they are willing to sell. does anyone have any tips on assembling the front suspension, my spring clamps are useless it seems , they foul everywhere when i try to use them, i'll scour the net for a different sort that has a better reach...
